Imagine this: a surprise inspection hits your rig, and you DON’T need to worry. It’s not a fantasy, it’s reality. Despite the industry wanting more autonomy and less interference from agencies, surprise inspections still show that many offshore rigs are committing serious safety violations. The increase in inspections are a result of the Deepwater Horizon accident back in 2010, when 11 offshore employees died.

For those using Wellsite Report, inspections cause no concern because employees have the resources to create a culture of safety. This reduces employee mistakes, improves equipment reliability, and keeps you abreast of what’s really happening in the field. Take for instance one of our customers who implemented WSR in 2016. They had a huge overturn of employees, only 10% of whom had more than 1 year experience in the oil and gas field. Normally, that would be a huge cause for concern: put a large number of inexperienced workers into a high-risk area and you’d think the safety issues would be numerous. However, our customer found that their Total Recordable Incident Rate stayed well below its number in 2015. For our customer, a surprise inspection would have cause little to no concern — they prioritize safety.

How do you keep a surprise inspection from causing you headaches, fines, and other frustrations? You implement Wellsite Report. You need to be consistently safe and Wellsite Report gives you the power to create a culture of safety – before, during and after inspection.

The oil and gas industry continues to rebound from the downturn a few years ago. Prices fell, and companies were forced to lay off good employees. For a while, things looked bleak. Even as prices improved, attrition grew as newcomers to the industry filled the roles of those who left during layoffs. Luckily, a few companies bounced back faster than others. One such company dealt with the results of the downturn differently than most: they invested time and money into safety.

What They Did

From 2015-2017, the company saw an above-average turnover rate. In 2016, as the downturn took its toll, they lost 61% of their employees. Choices had to be made, including how to keep morale high through a turbulent change. They chose the unique path of prioritizing their employees’ safety. In 2016, they began using Wellsite Report.

Measurement 2015 2016 2017
Employees 600 235 535
Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRI) 1.14 .49 .73
Experience Modification Rate (EMR) .58 .54 .52
Vehicle Rate (undisclosed) 3.36 1.41

Through this implementation, they cut their Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) by more than half, from 1.14 in 2015 to .49 in 2016. In 2017, they added 300 employees to put their staffing at over 600, averaging roughly 530 for the year. Only 10% of their 600 plus hires had more than one-year experience in the field, which can drive up risk and destroy performance. Wellsite Report enabled our client to maintain their culture of excellence, minimize risk and progress in an environment riddled with obstacles.

Although their number of employees nearly doubled in 2017, their TRI stayed well below the industry average and below its original 1.14 in 2015. With very little experience in the field, these impressive numbers proved how invaluable Wellsite Report can be to maintain or improving a safety culture.

In addition, their Experience Modification Rate (EMR) continuously dropped and allowed them to continually reduce their insurance costs. Finally, their Vehicle Rate plummeted by an impressive -1.95 between 2016 and 2017.

How They Did It

By using Wellsite Report, the company improved their safety culture while other companies struggled. Using the standard tools within WSR, the company was able to:

  1. Implement a state-of-the-art safety observation program
  2. Improve the quality of near miss reporting
  3. Capture and better manage Stop Work Authority events
  4. Improve action item tracking and completion
  5. Become an awarded recognized leader in safety

It’s a recurring theme over and over again – data is a company’s most valuable asset. Search “data valuable asset” on Google and get over 12 million search results, a shocking number of which compares data to the king of valuable assets: oil. Here at Wellsite Report, we wonder, why not have both?

Oil and gas was slow on the big data uptake, but now the industry is catching up. Data is finding new places to drill and reducing costs for production, but that’s only one way to implement data into your company. Wellsite Report uses data to reduce safety and equipment risks, and since we know that data is just as valuable as oil, we make sure that data stays in your hands.

A key feature of Wellsite Report includes the ability to export all of your data. Every single incident report, every single BBS Observation, every single key practice you create and share with your employees is saved not only on our cloud, but can be exported for offline access and editing. This allows you to control your data 100% – you have the freedom to analyze, organize, and present the data as needed with just a click. Better yet, we provide custom reports for your data to fit your needs.

It’s a no brainer. You already have the oil – it’s time to get the data. With the two leading assets for any company by your side, your company is unstoppable.

Yes! It’s happened! Between your team of employees reporting more near-misses and you implementing a system to follow-up on incidents, your sites have become safer, fewer employees are getting injured (including clumsy Johnny), and it’s time for you to  share the good news with the bosses. And you know the best way to impress your boss? Show them how you saved the company money!

Being able to discuss how safety affects business is key. The better your safety program, the lower your insurance costs, the better your production time, the lower your attorney fees…need we go on? Converting safety into savings isn’t always obvious but we can help you. Whether you’re looking for where you saved money or you’re still trying to convince someone to let you use Wellsite Report, we’ll explain why investing in safety is a win.

In 2016, OSHA shared their Top 10 serious and willful violations. Within those Top 10 categories were over 35,000 violations – yikes. When an OSHA violation is determined to be a Willful Violation (considered intentional violations, committed without regard for employee safety), a company can face up to $70,000. For one fine – and that doesn’t take into account what happens if an employee dies.

Yes, believe it or not, companies do get fined for Willful Violations. This not only hurts their pocket, but it hurts their employees, morale, and public opinion. When it’s time to hire, employees will check a company’s history and if they see a company has a history of violations, it makes them less inclined to apply. A company’s history can hurt their ability to hire the best candidate. So then the company has to ask: why spend money paying OSHA and still not being safe when you can pay a lot less money and also be safe? This is a no-brainer. You need Wellsite Report.

Beyond wanting employees to go home uninjured, a safe workplace is a cost-effective workplace. Making the decision to prioritize safety on your oil rig, wellsite, manufacturing facility, or construction zone can save you hundreds of thousands — of dollars. When management takes safety seriously, employees follow suit. That’s what Wellsite Report does for you.

In 2016, OSHA reported there were 2,365 serious violations regarding ladders. Serious OSHA violations can cost a company up to $7,000 – OSHA potentially could have fined companies $16.5 million dollars for not having safe ladders. These fines can vary, however, based on the severity, the company’s history of violations, and good faith put into the company. If you have Wellsite Report, then you track BBS observations and when OSHA comes knocking, the following is at your fingertips:

That’s what Wellsite Report does. We save you from OSHA fines; we can cut your Worker’s Compensation Insurance by HALF; we have proven to be the best solution to reduce unnecessary cost to your current safety programs. Why are you still paying to be unsafe?

Both your employees and your budget deserve to be protected. Wellsite Report helps you reduce risk, minimize costs, and gain efficiency. Let us show you how.

There’s a reason why companies like Netflix, Apple, and even paper-happy Xerox have embraced cloud computing for their businesses: it works. It gives them the ability to grow faster, manage processes and people more efficiently, and increase accessibility to their customers. We’re moving out of the early adopters stage — all industries are embracing cloud computing and IoT, including oil and gas.

Cloud computing isn’t just the future, it’s now, and those that are behind on adapting cloud-based processes are falling behind in the race to be the best. If you’re still not sure if cloud computing is right for your business, take a look at a few of the benefits of embracing the cloud.

Multi-Device Access

Whether on the field or at home, on your phone or on your laptop, you’re able to access information from anywhere at anytime. This makes your team more efficient and allows them to send updates and complete tasks without leaving the program, which ensures you will always have the full history of the incident or project. Random papers, texts, and emails are a thing of the past.

Reduced IT Costs

The system is already built and maintained by a third party. This means your IT team can focus on their own security systems, help Deborah in HR get into her email, and finally figure out what is going on with that stupid printer on the third floor! When an IT department is given the freedom to focus energy outside of development, your costs go down and their efficiency increases.

Continuity

Your headquarters in Houston can speak flawlessly with the Oklahoma and Pennsylvania fields. Everyone is on the same page: every single manager, every single fieldworker has the ability to speak the same language and report incidents and updates the same way. No more interpreting each field’s special vernacular.

Permanent Archive

Those file cabinets in the back of the HR Department that everyone dreads drudging through are a thing of the past. Everything is archived in one spot: the cloud. Print on command, weeks, months, or years later. When you need it, it’s there, easy to find.

Remember when Johnny hurt himself? For the billionth time? It’s one thing to have to deal with Johnny’s antics in the moment, but we don’t always consider the continuing time consumption that happens post-accident. Human Resources gets involved and let’s hope Johnny doesn’t need workman’s compensation. Having your field be down one man doesn’t help, either. And of course, lingering off in the distance is the next accident, just waiting to throw off your timeline.

It doesn’t have to be this way. A better observation management process could have prevented Johnny from slipping on those steps long ago. Learning from your mistakes, you’ve implemented Wellsite Report (WSR) and now your team is reporting safety incidents and concerns more than ever. Now what? Following up on incidents takes time and resources. What’s the best way to ensure your team understands root causes, preventative measures, and keeping track of the process? We’ll show you best practices to stay engaged with your team without wasting time.

Incident Management is crucial to this process, and at Wellsite Report, we’ve streamlined the process so it’s easier than ever to hold everyone accountable for their roles in preventing future incidents. With WSR, you have what you need to dig down to the root cause of each incident and take action to make your work site safer.

It’s easy, it’s intuitive, it’s fast. And for the first time in years, you aren’t worrying about Johnny.

Check out our second webinar on observation management, WSR 101: Incident Management and Technology, to understand the process and importance of a streamlined incident management system!
